Defense Martial

What self-defense/martial art(s) in the U.S. involves primary use of the legs/feet? ?
I’d like to learn martial arts, but not use my hands, as it’s my only way of producing art (right mainly, left can only write) by drawing/painting. I wanted to learn Taekkyon (Korean martial art), but I don’t think they exist in the U.S. In California mainly, and possible not cost much.
Tae Kwon Do is 70% kicking. You should be fine doing that, especially if you find a WTF school (World Tae Kwon Do Federation). The sparring that you see at the Olympics is WTF sparring…VERY little punching.
The truth is though, most martial arts done properly should leave you with little injuries. I mean, unless you’re training to be a cage fighter, you should be fine

Caine Mutiny Court Martial $17.55 Rated: PGSynopsis: Set in early 1945, during the height of World War II, this is a powerful drama of naval trial proceedings with an exceptional cast. Oscar(r)-nominated director Robert Altman (1970, M*A*S*H, 1992, The Player) takes on the much-adapted tale of Lt. Cmdr. Queeg (played by Brad Davis), picking up at the court-martial of Lt. Maryk (Jeff Daniels) for relieving Lt. Cmdr. Queeg of command of the destroyer U.S.S. Caine at the height of a storm. Eric Bogosian plays Lt. Greenwald, the defense attorney who, despite being ambivalent toward his client, is forced to mount a defense on his behalf. Expertly directed by Robert Altman, written and featuring a screenplay by Herman Wouk, this made-for-television movie excels at revealing the tensions between its central characters, including Lt. Cmdr. John Challee (Peter Gallagher) and Capt. Blakely (Michael Murphy). Newly remastered. |

Martial Mechanics: Maximum Results with Minimum Effort in the Practice of the Martial Arts $16.96 Interest in a wide range of martial arts grows exponentially each year, but few practitioners understand the scientific forces that underlie these arts. The originators of ancient traditional systems intuitively grasped the body mechanics behind their disciplines, and thus were capable of generating uncanny striking force. Contemporary students, on the other hand, often fail to achieve the high levels of technical proficiency they desire because they are unaware of these laws and how they work in a martial arts context. Drawing on the author’s decades of experience as both student and teacher, "Martial Mechanics "explains, in humorous, easy-to-understand language, how physics and kinesiology affect martial arts techniques and how readers can best utilize them to make them faster, more powerful, and hence more effective in actual combat. Featuring black-and-white photographs throughout, "Martial Mechanics" is written for both internal and external martial artists, " "mixed martial arts practitioners with an interest in competition or self-defense, students of kung fu, karate, taekwondo, muay thai boxing, kickboxing, wing chun, and more. Even many of the traditional grappling arts utilize certain striking techniques, and their disciples as well can improve their percussive skills with this practical guide. |

Martial Maneuvers: Fighting Principles and Tactics of the Internal Martial Arts $17.77 In "Martial Maneuvers, "Phillip Starr demonstrates that while the internal martial arts–Taijiquan, Bagua Zhang, and Xingyi Quan–might be considered ineffective for practical self-defense, they in fact have a long history of combat use. Starr argues that most teachers and practitioners of the internal arts have forgotten their rich martial heritage, focusing instead on their applicability for health or spiritual practices. Starr returns to the roots of the three major internal arts, demonstrating the combative principles upon which they were originally based. "Martial Maneuvers "often takes a lighthearted and humorous approach to what can often be challenging material, and provides training routines in easy-to-understand language. Numerous photos demonstrate the step-by-step implementation of fighting techniques, teaching readers how to apply them to their own chosen martial disciplines. While designed primarily for the internal martial artist, the techniques demonstrated in "Martial Maneuvers "can also benefit and enrich the training of a student of any discipline, including karate and kung fu. |

Secrets of Effective Offense: Survival Strategies for Self-Defense, Martial Arts, and Law Enforcement $7.93 There are many self-defense books on the market, all of which stress reaction in the face of an attacker’s aggression, and few of which are not hampered by invalid assumptions derived from carefully constrained martial sports. The emphasis is overwhelmingly on reactive technique, rather than proactive strategy. But, as any football fan knows, most often the best defense is a strong, unpredictable offense. With a slavish dedication to the wrong training paradigm and unrealistic goals and attitudes, a fighter who suddenly faces the fight of his life has to make a complete shift, or fail. The truth is, it’s usually too late–on the street, in particular, but also in the ring. Reaction time is seldom as fast as the time it takes to attack. All the dedication and hard training in the world can’t alter or overcome this unpleasant fact. In Secrets of Effective Offense, Marc MacYoung, in the grand tradition of Sun Tzu and Clausewitz, draws on his long experience to teach the strategy and tactical skills necessary to: 1) avoid dangerous situations, 2) defuse unavoidable dangerous situations, and 3) take charge of dangerous situations by switching from defense to the necessary level of effective offense. With black-and-white photographs and straightforward description, MacYoung provides an indispensable handbook for those who are willing to take charge. |

Mastering Sambo for Mixed Martial Arts $19.81 The founders of Russian sambo sifted through all of the worldas martial arts, including judo and jiujitsu, to get the most combat-effective techniques available. Each technique was carefully dissected and considered for its merits in achieving samboas ultimate goal: to stop an armed or unarmed adversary in the least time possible. In this book, author Scott Sonnon traces the development of the four types of sambo (self-defense, sport-wrestling, combat sambo and Spetsnaz) and then focuses on samboas mixed martial arts applications. Here he reveals the signature asaddlea techniques that have made him one of the most respected leg-lock coaches in the world. With 101 step-by-step moves a including entries, sweeps, passes, recounters and a host of submissions a this series is a must for all MMA competitors searching for an edge over the competition. Sambo prides itself on fast-wrestling, with only 60 seconds of groundfighting permitted. In mixed martial arts, however, these locks only work 20 percent of the time and aren’t worth sacrificing quality position. As a result, Sonnon modified traditional sambo to become a alower-halfa positional approach so that fighters could both strike and defend against strikes, maintain positional dominance and easily transition from one submission to the next in a chess-like fashion, as Brazilian Jiujitsu has become known for in the aupper-halfa game. Now you too can learn these winning strategies from one of the best sambo instructors in the world. |

Martial $27.75 Martial (Marcus Valerius Martialis) was a Spanish writer who lived in Rome in the second half of the first century AD. He wrote only in the genre of epigram, invented by the Greeks, which he chose because of his dislike of all that was pretentious and escapist in contemporary literature, where stale mythological topics were regarded as both ‘elevated’ and, in times of political danger, safe. His own boundless interest in the life he saw around him in Rome, and his sense of humour, led him to prefer to express himself in short and highly polished poems. He brought the genre to such a pitch of perfection that his work has defined it for subsequent authors. Although only a limited number of his own epigrams conform to the dictionary definition as ‘a short poem ending in a witty turn of thought’, their effectiveness has shaped this definition. This book tells what we know about the man’s commonsense attitude to life, and his hatred of hypocrisy and malice. It assesses his debt to literary tradition and the astonishing influence he had on later writers. |
